{"id":687,"date":"2008-12-14T14:33:24","date_gmt":"2008-12-14T19:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iomaire.com\/?p=687"},"modified":"2012-03-27T16:57:16","modified_gmt":"2012-03-27T20:57:16","slug":"a-cartoon-for-our-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iomaire.com\/index.php\/2008\/12\/14\/a-cartoon-for-our-times\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cartoon For Our Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I found this cartoon on <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.straightnorth.com\/distributism-a-third-response-to-poverty\/\">Brad Shorr&#8217;s<\/a> blog and thought it summed up our present sad state of affairs quite well:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iomaire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/chesterton1.jpg\" alt=\"Chesterton.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"479\" height=\"354\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The gentleman on the left, putting money into the hat, is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G._K._Chesterton\">G. K. Chesterton<\/a>, who, with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hilaire_Belloc\">Hilaire Belloc<\/a>, promoted a socioeconomic philosophy called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distributism\">distributism<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>We live in interesting times.  Senator Obama&#8217;s campaign for the presidency had a central theme of change.  Now, we need to make sure that, as President,  he lives up to those promises.  Substantial progress has already been made towards what I would call &#8220;neo-distributism&#8221;, starting with the &#8220;back-to-the-land&#8221; movement of the 1970s, the rise of organic farming, permaculture, community supported agriculture, and the growing realization that burning fossil fuels is rapidly leading to eco-catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>The 1930s, with FDR in office, seem to be analogous to our current difficulties. Then, as now, there were many people looking at alternatives to the status quo.
