With her extraordinary voice, she inspired a generation of social activists.  My favorite song by her is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Hill\">Joe Hill<\/a>&#8220;, the story of an IWW activist who was executed by a firing squad after being found guilty of murder in a controversial trial.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"445\" height=\"364\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/wyzojv63vNY&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0&#038;color1=0xe1600f&#038;color2=0xfebd01&#038;border=1&#038;showinfo=0\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/wyzojv63vNY&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0&#038;color1=0xe1600f&#038;color2=0xfebd01&#038;border=1&#038;showinfo=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"445\" height=\"364\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Night_They_Drove_Old_Dixie_Down\">The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down<\/a>&#8221; was written by Robbie Robinson, of <a href=\"http:\/\/theband.hiof.no\/\">The Band<\/a>, in 1969, and covered by Joan Baez in 1970.  She did not have the lyrics but instead learned it by ear, so she changed some of the wording, but later sang it as it was written by Robbie Robinson.  The song tells the story of Virgil Caine, who was mourning the loss of his brother during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historynet.com\/siege-of-petersburg-the-city-and-citizens-were-impacted-from-the-start.htm\">Siege of Petersburg<\/a> in the closing days of the War Between the States.
