A Progressive Answer to Glenn Beck
While reading the comments posted about an article by David Sirota on the corrupting influence of military power in America, I came across a link to an interesting concept: Devon Noll, of Colbert, Washington, is planning a cross-country trip, starting October 18 and ending in Washington, D.C. on November 3. On that day, if the trip is successful, a large number of people will gather to protest the state of affairs in this country from a progressive standpoint, not a right-wing populist standpoint, as we saw in early September with the Tea Party protest. I would encourage my readers to go to the Let Freedom Ring website and browse through the pages. Post a message on your blogs about the idea that Devon Noll came up with. There were about 70,000 Tea Baggers in Washington, D.C. on September 12, an event that was largely funded by FreedomWorks and Americans For Prosperity and promoted by Fox News, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch.
I’m not hopeful that a trip organized by a single person in Washington state can have the impact that the Tea Baggers march did, but it doesn’t hurt to spread the word. If enough people learn about this march and take the time to get involved, who knows what could happen? Even if this event is not terribly successful this year, there are plans for this to be an annual event, so there may be hope for progressives in this country, after all!
