George Lakoff on Moral Politics
George Lakoff is a linguist and has worked with the idea of metaphors for a number of years. When I was in college, I took a course in linguistics and found it to be very interesting, but the course I took dealt with the structure of language and the concept of metaphors was not covered. That would probably have been a graduate course, but I did not continue on to graduate school. The following video is 58 minutes long, so if you don’t have a lot of time to watch the whole presentation, try watching as much as you can. Within the first 20 minutes, George addresses the phenomenon of James Dobson and his Focus on Family movement, as well as Adam Smith. It is a very interesting video.
